It’s all about Tires… Maintenance and Proper Care

Posted by on Jul 15, 2016 in Junk My Car Queens | 0 comments

We all know that tires are one of the most “should be well taken care of” parts of a car. Not only it will save your life in the road and provide you a better ride but also will save your pocket with future major expenses.

Here are the reasons why you should (if you haven’t done so) pay attention in taking care of your car’s tire:

  1. It will help you save money
Regular maintenance, rotation, inspection and alignment can help you save money. These activities can extend the life of your tires allowing you to not buy often. Also, checking the tire’s pressure is essential. Do you know that under inflated tire wear out faster? On the other hand, overinflated tire has a tendency to blow out easily.
  2. It will help you save money on fuel
Proper inflation pressure is a must. When your tire is under inflated, your car is using excess fuel. Not only that. Since under inflated tires have higher rolling resistance, your engine needs to double work to move your vehicle.
  3. It ensures safety
Who would have wanted to get engaged in a car accident? No one but it actually happens, right? And the common reasons are poor tire tread, exceeding the load capacity and not being aware of your car tires condition. As a tip, don’t be shy to use your spare tire especially if you notice that something is wrong with one of your tires.

So the good question now is, “How to take care of your tires?”
It’s simple and easy. RMA or the Rubber Manufacturers Association advises you to remember this: “Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART (Pressure, Alignment, Rotation, Tread)”.

  • Pressure – As mentioned a while ago, proper inflation pressure is a must. It should not be under or overinflated.
  • Alignment – Have a tire dealer check your tire to see if your car is properly aligned.
  • Rotation – It is the process of removing your tires and move to a different position. The reason for this is to make sure that tires wear evenly so they can last longer. Unless specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual, rotation should be done approximately 5000-8000 miles.
  • Tread – One way to see if your tire tread is healthy is by using a penny. Simply insert the penny with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. Now, if you can see all Lincoln’s head, then you should replace your tire immediately.

We had a saying that prevention is better than cure or better be safe than sorry and those apply here. Why take the risk of having a ride with a poor tire if you can replace it in the first place? If you worry about the expenses, you really don’t need to buy a new tire. You can also consider salvage yards. Just like with us, we have different types of wheels just right for your car. And we guarantee you that they are safe and sound to use. If you wanted to check for yourself, drop us by. We are conveniently located in Jamaica and Queens. We also have cheap used auto parts, just in case you needed one. So, see yah!

Make a vehicle service schedule by including steps like conditioning engine performance, keeping tires well inflated, replacing air filters regularly, changing oil on a regular basis and check the quality of your gas cap. Routine maintenance helps reduce dark smoke emissions and fuel consumption to save money.
  2. If you maintain and look after your current car, there we go with step number 2. You can limit the number of new cars you buy over the course of a lifetime. Extending your car’s road worthiness is as simple as investing and saving. You’ll gain years of reliable service without monthly car payments and higher insurance rates.
  3. Repair your engine when faced with serious engine trouble. A re-manufactured/rebuilt engine can give your car new life and make it more fuel efficient for about the cost of an average down payment on a new car.
  4. Recycle or properly dispose used motor oil, old tires, flat batteries, fluids and other vehicle components to help protect the planet when performing vehicle maintenance or repairs. You can do this by visiting a salvage yard near your place.

Posted by on May 15, 2016 in Junk My Car Queens | 0 comments

As an engine acquires mileage, the likelihood of having engine problem also increases.
Oftentimes no matter how old the engine is it will not function as well as the new ones. In addition, the make and the model as well doesn’t affect the effectiveness of the engine. It is all about the mileage if the car run for more than 150 000 miles or equivalent to 250 000 Km, it is not considered a good car. In this article, here are some common engine problems to look for.

Overheating engine

Most of the modern cars that we are using nowadays has temperature gauges that measures the level of how hot the engine is. Coolant level may affect the car’s temperature a low coolant level can cause the engine to overheat so does low water level from the radiator.
If you see a warning light indicating increased temperature from your engine, have a stop, check your water or coolant level but be careful, as the high pressure may burst and cause burn injuries. Overheating can cause expensive engine repairs but you see, maintaining the coolant and water level is the simplest way to prevent engine overheating. Furthermore, leaking or busted gasket heads may also cause overheating. Another indication of overheating is coolant lose or white cloudy smoke exiting from the hood. When you see these, have a pit stop.

Engine is not starting.

Another problem commonly encountered by drivers is a dead engine or a non-starting engine. It may be caused of two main problems. If you click your key and nothing happens in the engine start the reason is a flat battery. On the other hand, if the engine starts but not continuing and eventually dies, the problem is the fuel or the ignition. Furthermore, a dead engine may also be the reason of corroded battery cables, starter motor fuel delay, clogged fuel filter, or ignition switch failure. These problems may be prevented through routine check-up so be sure to check the inside of your car regularly.

Service Engine Light

Our cars now are smarter than we think. Now, most modern cars detect malfunctions and has sensors that troubleshoots problems. Whether its low fluid levels, emissions, or powertrains it does the job. It alerts the drivers for future repairs. Aside from that it also may indicate low compression or compressed air levels, faulty electrical issues, or missing gas caps. Just make sure when you see the warning have a thorough look about it.

When to Change your Car Tires?

Posted by on Feb 15, 2016 in Junk My Car Queens | 0 comments

Tire is one of the most essential parts of a car. It is better to have to check to ensure safety. Why?

According to N.H.T.S.A, about 200 fatalities are caused by tires failure. Yes! So why wait to be in this 200 list when you can avoid it in the first place. Here are some tips that will help you decide if it is the right time to replace your car tire and shop for new.

    1. Check if the tread is down to 1/16th of an inch (1.6mm).
If this is the case, the tire is no longer safe. You might encounter hydroplaning on wet roads and cause brake control issues.
    2. Check the tread using the “penny test”.
Your buddy here is right there in your pocket. Take a penny and face Lincoln towards you then flip upside down. Now place it in center of the tread and observe the following:

      • If the very top of Lincoln’s head is showing or the copper above it, do not think twice and replace your tires immediately.
      • If Lincoln’s hair on top of his head is halfway seen, you better consider shopping for new tires.
      • If the hair on of top of his head is not showing; given that it is inserted deeply, then congratulations! Your tires are healthy as a bull!
    3. Use a tread depth indicator or gauge to measure your tire’s head.
    4. Let your take their retirement age. The minimum replacement time that is recommended by the N. H.T.S. A is six years and 10 years as the maximum.
    5. Be observant of dry rot. Little cracks in your tire are signs of damage. It means that the rubber is breaking down. Have it check or consider replacing it.

Make it a habit of checking your tires for a safe ride. As the saying goes, “Better safe than sorry.” But if you find buying new ones a pain in your pocket, you can still consider buying at salvage yard.

Salvage Vehicles – Know what went wrong

Posted by on Sep 15, 2015 in Junk My Car Queens | 0 comments

Salvage vehicles are not only those that were damaged due to a serious accident. There are several other reasons why they acquired a salvage title, therefore, it does not automatically mean that they can no longer be used once again.

  1. Damaged by Hail
  2. Damaged by Flood
  3. Theft Recovery
  4. Vandalism
  5. Non-Repairable

There are still some that are still road efficient, thus, can still be safely used when travelling, therefore, it is still okay to purchase one and have the papers fixed for legal purposes. If you are planning to purchase a salvage vehicle, make sure that you choose the right one. Opt for those who were recovered from theft or those that were physically damaged due to spray painting. These vehicles are still safe to use because the damages were not incurred on the engine itself.

These are sold at very cheap prices. All you have to do is to contact DMV for proper assessment, and a new title will be given to you once again. Although the “salvage title” may still be there, you can safely drive your car without violating the law as long as you have efficiently managed all the legal documentations.

Check out New York City Auto Salvage & Glass for vehicles that have gone through vandalism and theft. We offer reasonable rates to new and old clients. Rest assured that you will be thoroughly guided by our skilled and knowledgeable employees.
